Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > This thing is cool but I forget the name they called it. It was installed down there in the marsh flats pictured at the begining of this gallery. Test guns could be mounted on this part for test firing at the mountain across the river.

Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > They had an exhibit on our tour day. The description tag calls this ball both "grape shot" and "cannister shot". They were the same idea but I have it on good authority that the terms are not interchangeable. Grape shot was larger than canister shot so this must be grapeshot because it is pretty big. Either way, a load of iron balls would be packed into a shell and fired out of a cannon making the gun a giant shot gun. Imagine thousands of guys charging into a hailstorm of this iron. Sometimes gunners would load two or more charges into a gun giving the enemy "double cannister". Ouch.
