Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > I got a chance to take a rare tour of the Cold Spring Foundry on the east bank of the Hudson River a bit north of West Point. The tour was given by the head archaeologist working on the project there. This shot is from the flats that form the river front and lead to the gorge which was the foundry site. Out in the brush there was a test site set up during the Civil War which tested ordnance and guns by firing into the mountain across the river....For further info see //www.hudsonvalleyruins.org/yasinsac/foundry/foundry.html
Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > This and the next shot show additional panorama along the river front. From the previously cited web site: "Just south of downtown Cold Spring is a placid wooded area that was once the site of the "deep breathing..furnaces, and the sullen, monotonous pulsations of trip hammers"* of the well-known West Point Foundry. The foundry, which began operations in 1817 and continued through the 1880s, was the "most extensive and complete of the iron works of the United States."*

Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > This is from the office building at the entrance to the gorge in which the foundry was nestled. The view looks up stream, up the valley
Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > Office building from 1865, The cuppola has been removed and is housed in the green teepee shelter

Al Cavalari (theflagguys) > Looking upwards into the valley, the industrial site was formed like the main street of a town. The buildings housed every manner of production facilities and shops. That is not butcher shops, or bake shops. That would be carpentry shops, metal shops and such facilities for the various trades. The next photo is in the approximate location of the front of the arched building on the right behind the shed with the slanted roof.
